Rubber Dam Isolation

 Rubber Dam Isolation
Why use a rubber dam?,  What is it? ,What does it do?

The mouth is full of many things. All of these parts work together to help you lubricate, chew, move food around, and even make expressions, such as a smile. While all of these parts are helpful in everyday living, some of these things can and do get in the way during dental procedures.

Saliva is the watery substance that lubricates your mouth and starts the digestive process for your food. While saliva is so very necessary for your oral health, it can cause problems during dental procedures.

First of all, saliva is wet. Many dental materials, such as resin bonded composites [white fillings] and gold foils, cannot be placed in a wet environment. The wetness destroys the seal of the filling thus making the life of the filling shorter.

Secondly, saliva contains bacteria that, if it comes in contact with an open tooth, can lead to secondary decay or even, in the case of root canal therapy, can cause infection.

What is it?

The rubber dam is an elastic material that isolates the tooth or teeth for the dental procedure. Sealing out moisture and bacteria, it provides a clean environment for Dr. Friz to work.

Not only that, but the rubber dam provides a safe environment for you. No longer do you have to worry about breathing in tooth dust, or swallowing water spray, or even small dental instruments as your treatment is being rendered. You don't have to worry about your tongue or cheek flapping into the operating area where it could be cut or bruised. The rubber dam keeps all of those things safe and sound.

In general, our patients find the rubber dam helpful and comforting. We find that it helps us do the high quality dental work you expect and deserve.
